North of Denizli, about 5 and a half hours drive from Villa Carlijn, is the special Pamukkale. The natural phenomenon means in the Turkish Castle of Cotton. Pamukkale is a huge tourist attraction and that is especially noticeable in the summer. Buses come and go, so you sometimes have to shuffle foot by foot along the paths. However, this does not detract from the uniqueness of these gigantic lime waterfalls.
Creation process
Pamukkale has an impressive creation process. It is not normal spring water that flows down. The water from the rock lakes has medicinal properties and an almost constant temperature of about 35˚C. The water has been flowing down the mountain walls for centuries. The calcium and carbonated spring water ends up on the large plateaus. Because the calcium carbonate from the warm water converts into lime, the gigantic limestone terraces are created. Over the years it has become such thick packs of lime that it looks a bit like snow from a distance.
In danger
The scale formation process was endangered due to the large number of visitors. The baths became dirty and the lime layer started to wear out. The situation has now been restored by constructing baths along a new footpath and by prohibiting the wearing of shoes. The path remains continuously under water, so that the process of lime formation continues undisturbed.
