Aspendos is an ancient Greco-Roman city just off the coast of Antalya. It is best known for the amphitheater, which is the best-preserved example in the whole world. There was also a city with a market, temple and other buildings.
History
Aspendos was the most important city in Pamphylia, a Roman province. It was located along the Eurymedon River, 16 kilometers from the Mediterranean coast. Aspendos was founded around 1000 BC. founded by settlers from the Greek city-state of Argos.
Because many coins from Aspendos have been found in the region around Aspendos, it has become clear that it was a large trading center at the time. Much was traded there in salt, oil and wool.
In 190 BC. the city was taken by the Romans, who stole all the art treasures. At the end of the Roman Empire, the city fell into disrepair.

Amphitheater
The magnificent Aspendos Amphitheater was built in the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD). It was built under the direction of two brothers, as a gift to the city and the gods.
